San Francisco-based Mik Gaspay works with the tradition of the readymade commingled with the weight of contemporary consumerism to create work attempting to distill narratives pertaining to identity. With regard to the utility and the disposability of everyday objects, Gaspay uncovers a lineage of uncertainty conjoined within the secluded politics of the material goods one surrounds themselves with through various media.
FWIW reacts to found items, their limited lifespan and meanings by attempting to translate and capture substance and structure behind objects and what they offer beyond the surface. FWIW, an acronym stemming from the 1966 song by Buffalo Springfield, 'For What It's Worth', parlays the title of the highly politicized song into a truncated version of itself to conjure corporate speak and text/chat language of our current moment, commenting on the ultimate transience of objects we consume and collect.
Mik Gaspay was born in Quezon City, Philippines and lives and works in San Francisco, CA. He received an MFA from California College for the Arts San Francisco (2011). Gaspay's exhibition history includes the Asian Art Museum (San Francisco, CA), Unspeakable Projects (San Francisco, CA), Center for Art + Thought (Chicago, IL), Southern Exposure (San Francisco, CA), White Box Gallery (New York, NY), Mission 17 (San Francisco, CA), the Berkeley Art Center (Berkeley, CA) among others. Gaspay is the recipient of San Francisco's Public Art Commission award in conjunction with San Francisco Chinese Culture Center (2016).
